Transport
In the transport sector PUK aims to assist public sector bodies introduce investment so that the Government can succeed in delivering its objectives for a modern transport system. In England we work with HM Treasury, Department for Transport, Highways Agency, Transport for London and regional and local transport agencies such as PTEs and Local Authorities. In the devolved territories we work with the Scottish Executive and the Strategic Investment Board in Northern Ireland .
PUK's transport activities range from assisting central government departments target the strategic priorities for investment and shape the approach for their delivery, through direct hands on involvement in achieving those objectives, to troubleshooting problem areas that arise. Notable areas of activity have been our support to the PPP programmes to establish Network Rail as a successor to Railtrack, to achieve unprecedented levels of investment to London Underground through the PFI and PPP Infraco contracts and, to pursue a large programme of investment in light rail including extensions to the Docklands Light Railway, and new schemes in Nottingham, Leeds, Portsmouth and Edinburgh. PUK has also worked closely with the promoters of the Crossrail project in London to develop a business case and evaluate funding and procurement models and with local authorities promoting highways maintenance and street lighting schemes.
PUK transport team also supports overseas national or provincial administrations in developing PPP initiatives. Our involvement is in the form of knowledge transfer and direct contributions to programmes and projects. Examples include:
- working with the Treasury department and province for a major rail project in South Africa
- working with the Treasury department and Highways department on a PPP roads programme in Mexico .
